Introduction
Department of Basic English (originally known as Department of Foreign Languages) was first established in 1956 by lecturer Ngo Tri Oanh as the head the department and then was undertook by lecturer Le Thi Thuan. During this period, the Department was in charge of Russian, French, Chinese and English teaching with the main focus on Russian.
In February, 2007, Department of Foreign Languages was divided into two departments: Department of Language Theory led by Ha Thi Lan M.A., then undertook by Pham Thi Tuyet Thanh M.A. and Department of Language Practice led by Tran Hoai Nam M.A., then undertook by Ngo Thi Thanh Tam M.A.
On June 7th, 2017, due to the rearrangement of the organizational structure, the school administrator decided to merge 2 departments into Department of Foreign Languages led by Ms. Ngo Thi Thanh Tam.
In November, 2016, the Faculty was allowed to implement a new major – English Language; as a result, on May 3rd, 2017, Vietnam National University of Agriculture restructured and renamed Department of Foreign Languages to Department of Basic English and established a new department named Department of Professional English to be suitable with assigned functions.
Since September 1st, 2021, according to Decision No 4183/ QD-HVN of Director of Vietnam National University of Agriculture, Department of Basic English has been in charge of by Pham Huong Lan, M.A. The Department has been responsible for teaching French and English, mainly concentrating on teaching General English and English for Specific Purposes for students and colleges of all faculties in the university.
With a long history which was coincident with the establishment of the university, the Department have constantly grown and developed along with the development of University and Faculty. The responsibilities of the Department have been increasingly diverse and far heavier, and the scale has also been expanded. The relations of the Department with agencies inside and outside the university have been reinforced and broadened as well.
Structure and Functions
– Staff: 11 lecturers (01 Doctor, 02 PhD Students, 08 Masters) and 1 technician (Bachelor)
– Courses undertaken: The Department is in charge of 46 courses including General English , General French, English for Specific Purposes and French for Specific Purposes for full-time students at the university (Supplementary English, English 0, English 1, English 2, English 3, English for Specific Purpose Courses for the faculties of Agronomy, Natural Resources and Environment, Animal Science, Information Technology, Food Science and Technology, Engineering, Biotechnology, Economics and Rural Development, Accounting and Business Management, Social Science, Tourism and Foreign Languages, Veterinary Medicine, Fisheries), Enhanced English 0, 1, 2, and 3.
Scientific research
Scientific research directions: English Teaching Methods, Teaching English in a multicultural environment, English language, Culture of English-speaking countries, etc. Research directions are developed and integrated in many ways to improve the quality of English teaching and learning at Vietnam National University of Agriculture in particular, and to meet the increasingly high requirements for English teaching and learning of the society in general.
Seminars: 8 out of 12 staff members are currently participating in the Faculty’s Strong Research Group of English Applied Linguistics. Every month, the Department participates in organizing seminars in order to exchange and evaluate teaching methods, and to improve professional knowledge for lecturers.
Research projects: The Department has conducted 10 university-level research projects, and has published 15 articles in domestic and foreign research journals (Vietnam Journal of Agricultural Science, Journal of Education, Journal of Education and Society, Journal of Educational Equipment, etc.). The Department also has articles in several conference proceedings such as “Conference: Improving the Quality of Foreign Language Teaching and Learning at Hanoi University of Agriculture – 03/2011”, “Conference: Innovating and Improving the Quality of English Training at Institutes, Universities and Colleges under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development – 2016”, etc.
